So many lessons in 1 Samuel 17
I. The enemy Philistines were where they were not supposed to be
In a long low valley
Saul and Israel were there in battle formation to protect
But we do not find them seeking God
Ii. Their champion is there challenging them
Standing on a hill to be seen, to be obvious
He is a tall imposing figure
He comes dressed in bronze armor wearing a bronze helmet, even on his shins
He has a bronze sword between his shoulders
He has a thick spear in his hand
With a small shield bearer in front
Iii.He challenges Israel
Why don’t we do this one on one?
Aren’t you servants of Saul?
Would not have believed God could deliver
I defy the ranks of Israel
Iv. Israel is terrified
Goliath came 40 days 2 x a day
But there was no faith in them
Three of Jesses sons are there
Perhaps enough for Saul to be satisfied
No draft, only choice
Others were busy with family chores
V. Jesse sends David
Youngest, already anointed king
Perhaps Jesse thought something would happen
Took a large bounty to the camp
David got up early and made provisions for the sheep
He gets there and runs up to the line to hear
Vi. Bounty of Saul
Promise of Merab and riches, exemption
Touted by Israelite man, an implant?
David asks again perhaps to encourage a warrior to take the challenge
Eliab, the oldest brother, I know your arrogance!
Again he asks
Vii. In front of Saul
Don’t let anyone be discouraged, I will go
But you are too young, too weak
David. But I already killed a lion and a bear
God often uses past experiences to remind us of His strength in
present circumstances
God will rescue me
Use this armor
Untried, Unnecessary, unaccustomed
Maybe too large
Resignation of Saul to defeat
Viii. Prep with five smooth stones
No way this would be enough
No way these could kill or even wound
It took time to choose David was calm
He knew the size and kind to choose
He was experienced with the use
Not a natural way to use, to aim
Ix. The dare, the challenge
The philistine. Am I only a dog this little guy could hurt?
I’ll give your flesh to be eaten by birds
David. You come with mans weapons
I come in the name, the power of YHWH, God of Armies
You, sir, have defied Him!
Today after all your days of daring the Lord will hand you over to me
I will cut your head off. Remember I don’t have a sword
I will give you to the birds and your army
The world will know Israel has a real God,
The world will know the battle is the Lord’s
He will hand you over to us
X. One stone
Sank into his forehead, no physics, no physical way
Did he forget his helmet?
David pulls the enemy sword and slices off the head
Israel chases after them all the way to Ekron
But does no more
